The incredible olm, Proteus anguinus, SLOVENIA/DIVJE JEZERO, IDRIJA Slovenia has more than 9,000 registered caves, like an entire basement section to the normal landscape above. In these and in some locations in Italy, Croatia and Bosnia-Herzegovina lives one of the world’s more strange creatures, the olm or “Baby Dragon”. Without eyes, without pigment and with a set of red gills on the outside of the body, this all-white cave salamander can live to be over 100 years old, reaches sexual maturity at the age of 17, and is able to survive without any food at all for at least 6 years!
